GNOME vs. KDE: The Final Smackdown

Two Linux desktops step into the ring. But in the end, there can be only one...

ROUND THREE: INTERNAL INJURIES

Ken: What a match this has been so far. The bell has rung and round three is now underway.

Red: KDE takes an early offensive with its continuous monthly release cycle. GNOME’s less aggressive twice yearly release cycle puts it at a distinct disadvantage.

Ken: Oh! KDE just cited security vulnerabilities with those lagging updates. GNOME is staggered!

Red: It looks like GNOME is taking two conservative steps backwards. Trying to regain its composure …

Ken: GNOME is moving back in with accusations that KDE 4.x isn’t as customizable as GNOME.

Red: Yes, look at that! GNOME’s still has great footwork! GNOME steps in with another volley of utility vs. beauty punches.

Ken: KDE counters with the fact that utility is assumed! GNOME may need a serious update to get out of this one, Red.

Red: Yes, a major revision is long overdue. But look at that! Now GNOME is punching away at KDE’s gut — it’s underlying technology — Qt!

Ken: This is almost unwatchable! GNOME is pounding away at one of KDE’s weak spots! Qt 4 is inexperienced and unstable!

Red: I think KDE will come through this, Ken. Qt 4 may have its problems, but at least it’s well-documented!

Ken: True. KDE still looks great, but those blows from GNOME to the Qt 4 code are making it a bit unstable…

Red: Yes, but now KDE is swinging at GNOME’s lagging GTK+ development!

Ken: How much longer can the two of them take this kind of punishment?

Red: There is blood splattered all over the ring here at the linuxdlsazine Arena! These two gladiators have pushed each other well over the edge!

Ken: They’re barely able to throw further punches at this point!

Red: The fanboys are on their feet again! Groups from all over the stadium are chanting!

Ken: I think this is over. These two are done.

Red: They’re out there just holding each other up!

Ken: Where’s that bell?

Red: …And there’s the final bell! Everyone is rushing the ring! This place is pure pandemonium!

Ken: Watch the chairs! The fanboys are throwing chairs! They’re wrecking the place!

Red: Security!

END OF ROUND THREE

Ken: This has truly been a match for the history books.

Red: No doubt. But to have it end in all all-out war says something about these communities, I think. Let’s just tally that round three scorecard.

Ken: Well, after that severe beating in the second round, KDE came into the third with an unreal release cycle offensive.

Red: Yes, but despite that, GNOME was able to dominate the rest of the match with its customizability taps, its utility vs. beauty attempts, and finally with its arguments against Qt 4′s youth, inexperience, and instability versus GTK+’s conservative stability.

Ken: It all adds up.

Red: It sure does. And from my personal scorecard, it appears that GNOME took this third round.
