GNOME vs. KDE: The Final Smackdown

Two Linux desktops step into the ring. But in the end, there can be only one...

ROUND TWO: THE BEATDOWN

Ken: The bell for round two just sounded, and KDE is on the offensive with more about its improved applets and desktop features.

Red: And GNOME just got pasted with a hard right from KDE’s pastebin services; Quicklauncher, weather information, newsfeeds, comics and file sharing!

Ken: That had to hurt! Look at KDE continuing to jab with PowerDevil; The unobtrusive power management for laptops and mobile devices!

Red: Ouch! GNOME is almost unable to respond to KDE’s relentless pounding. Those new KDE printer tools make setting up and managing printers far easier than ever before.

Ken: They sure do. And that has GNOME staggered! GNOME is back against the ropes with that last combination!

Red: But what a response! GNOME counters with its lower memory usage than KDE.

Ken: KDE remains undaunted with a gut punch of its own — version 4.x uses 39% less memory than version 3.5.

Red: None of GNOME’s moves seem to phase KDE, Ken. It just steps up to put more hurt on GNOME with its new desktop Widgets and –

Ken: Oh, what an uppercut!!! I felt that punch way down here at ringside!

Red: GNOME just nailed KDE with the fact that KDE’s default office suite is KOffice!

Ken: Ouch! KDE just went to the mat! Hard!

Red: KOffice isn’t compatible with Microsoft Office?

Ken: You got it! That puts its users at a real disadvantage!

Red: It’s complete chaos here at the linuxdlsazine Arena! The fanboys are on their feet — they’re starting to punch each other!

Ken: Fights are breaking out all over the arena!

Referee: One!…Two!…Three!…

Red: KDE’s hurting badly on this one, Ken! This fight might be over right here and now!

Referee: Four!…Five!…

Red: In what looked like an even matchup, GNOME might’ve just found the golden ticket with that KOffice skull crusher!

Ken: You have to wonder what the KDE coaches are thinking right now.

Red: I’d be calling my bookee.

Referee: Six!…Seven!…Eight!…

Ken: Security is breaking up numerous fanboy-on-fanboy slap fights in the stands. Madness!

Red: Wait, KDE’s getting up! It looks like this match will go on after all! How can KDE recover from this? It’s cut!

Ken: KDE staggers to the ropes, swinging wildly with more about widgets, the Okular document reader and its enhanced KWin window manager!

Red: Dazed and confused, now KDE is dredging up its long history of educational applications including Kalzium, KStars and Math programs!

Ken: This is almost too sad to watch as KDE struggles to recover. GNOME clearly has the upper hand in this round.

Red: There’s the bell. KDE’s second rushes out to help the fighter back to the corner. Man, what a beating!

END OF ROUND TWO

Ken: My head it throbbing just from watching this punishment, Red. Let’s tally the score while GNOME and KDE take their corners and get ready for round three in this extreme, once-in-a-lifetime total desktop beatdown.

Red: Well, KDE came on strong in the early part of this round with it’s unique and improved applets and power management software, but I had it even with GNOME when they traded blows on memory consumption.

Ken: Then came the near-knockout punch of the century when GNOME landed that KOffice uppercut on KDE.

Red: Yes, but even after that, somehow KDE managed to rally enough to tap GNOME with its hook into the educational application area.

Ken: Shocking. As injured as it may be, my scorecard shows KDE ahead but weakened going into this third and final round. Let’s go back to the ring…
